Onion Bhajis

Onion Bhajis are essentially onion fritters that are seasoned with beautifully frangent spices. They are a popular side dish and starter in India, they can also be eaten as a snack. I decided to make this recipe to complete my Indian vegan “fakeaway”. This recipe would make a great side dish for my Rogan josh recipe paired with my Easy Mango Chutney.

I suggest making a quick yogurt and mint dip and squeezing a little bit of lemon juice on top. I hope you enjoy this very simple recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 3 large red onions.
  • 50 chickpea flour.
  • Tbsp normal flour.
  • 100ml of water.
  • 1 tsp cumin powder.
  • 1 tsp curry powder.
  • 1 tsp coriander powder.
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder.
  • 1 tsp salt.

Method:

  1. Firstly, preheat an oven to 180 degrees.
  2. Next, dice the onions into thin pieces, add them into a bowl and drizzle them with a little bit of vegetable oil.
  3. Then, sprinkle the onions with salt, season them with the spices and mix thoroughly.
  4. Now, make a slurry by mixing the chickpea flour and the water together.
  5. Then, sprinkle the onions with flour and incorporate the flour slurry until all the onions are salted.
  6. Next,  grease a cupcake pan with oil and mould the onions into the holes. Note: alternatively you can mould them into a disc shape and shallow fry them in a pan for 2-3 minutes each side.fullsizeoutput_e9.jpeg
  7. Bake them in the middle of the oven for 30 minutes (turning them over in 15-minute intervals).
